Vacuum Fluorescent Display

I learned how to control a Vacuum Fluorescent Display today.  Woot.  They're amazingly easy.  I stole one off of an ancient calculator.  Good times had by me.

Like "tail"? "less" can tail, too!

Like using "tail -f /var/log/apache2/access.log"?  Try this out:

Run this command "less /var/log/apache2/access.log"
Type "/POST" to find all "POST" matches (it highlights them)
Press "F" (yes, CAPITAL F, not lowercase), which then follows.

This will follow the file, highlighting "POST".  I never knew this was possible in "less", but it is.  Now you get highlighted matching while following.

The Internet is no doctor.

I can see how using the Internet to track down a symptom can make one believe they have every disease in the book.  Ugh.  I wish I could afford to see a doctor.
I watch "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" on a regular basis.  I love the guy.  But the guy that fills in for him when he's off is terrible.  When Keith isn't able to be on, the show should just be replaced with something else to fill in.  This David guy is no Keith Olbermann.

Jon Stewart vs Jim Cramer

Loved this interview.  I'm surprised that Jim Cramer just sat there and took it from Jon Stewart, but what else could he do?  Cramer's a little nuts on his show and seems to be wrong a large amount of the time.

What the hell is this?  XDomainRequest

Isn't the idea that we're all supposed to be going toward the standard, not introducing more crap to worry about when writing cross-browser code?  As explained on their site:

There is no public standard that applies to this object.

Grr.

Debit Card Trouble at Personix?

By Dusty on March 9, 2009 9:51 AM · No Comments
Not too long ago, everyone in our small town got a call saying that all debit cards are deactivated and new ones are being sent out.  Apparently there was a big security problem.  Today I found out that the company that dishes out the cards is called Personix.  The banks here all use them for their debit cards.  From what I was told, it was a problem at their company.

A quick search for news about this turns up nothing.  Is it so hush-hush that not even the media heard about this?  I did find on Google News that the Personix office in Boston is closing, announced just last month.  Is it related?  I don't know.  No one mentions it.

Edit:
Personix changed their name to Fiserv (because Fiserv bought them and merged).  Here is an advisory from Fiserv directly:

I hate PayPal

By Dusty on March 9, 2009 9:28 AM · No Comments
I got a voicemail message from PayPal today telling me to update my payment method for my monthly billing for my Website Payments Pro service.  The site won't let me.  The very difficult to understand Indian-sounding lady at PayPal was confused when I told her that it won't let me.  She treated me like an idiot and walked me through the process.  As expected, it wasn't fruitful.

I want the payment to come from my bank account.  Not too hard, no?  Well, she tells me that the system disabled my bank account as my payment method.  What?  I use my bank account with my PayPal debit card all the time.  She didn't seem to care to check that, even when I asked her to.  She puts me on hold and disappears for a very long time.  When she comes back, she says there's nothing they can do to reenable my bank account.  She wants me to use a different bank account or credit card.  No, I refuse.  If they can't fix this so very simple thing, why should I use their not-so-flawless system?  She looks through my entire account history and sees no problem with my bank account.  She never finds any declined bank transactions.  She has no idea why my bank account is supposedly disabled (even though I use it all the time...).  She goes to ask her manager and puts me on hold for a very long time again.  She comes back and says they'll try to figure it out and call me back.

I was on the phone about 45 minutes, mostly on hold.  About 10 minutes calmly talking to her, and about 5 minutes being very frustrated toward her.  The rest of the time was on hold.

I'm seriously losing confidence in PayPal.  If they can't fix this simple thing, I'm going to find someone else to process my credit card transactions.
Back when I started flying Frontier Airlines (2002 I think?), the flight attendants were pretty funny (much like in this video).  After about a year, they got boring.  I figured the FAA or Frontier decided humor was against some regulation.  Sad.  This funny video reminds me of it.  The funniest part is at the end.

"We love you, you love us.  We're much faster than the bus.  We hope you've enjoyed our hospitality.  Marry one of us and you'll fly free.  (Hey, it's much cheaper to buy the ticket..)"

And this guy (was working for ATA before it went under) is funny too:  http://www.youtube.com/user/FlyingKurt

LeafBridge has SMS

By Dusty on March 7, 2009 11:00 AM · No Comments
I've figured out how to do incoming and outgoing SMS messaging.  One of the big features of LeafBridge is the alert system.  It is important to be able to send alerts to users of whatever it is that they are monitoring.  Sending proper SMS messages (not just email-to-SMS gateway) is the best way to go for this.

The user can reply to the alert with some kind of action.  For example, if they were monitoring the fragmentation level on a specific drive on a specific computer, they will get a text message when the fragmentation goes over a certain level.  They can respond with a text message telling LeafBridge to initiate a defrag of that drive.  The user can even schedule it (via SMS) to initiate the defrag at a specific time or when the computer has been idle long enough.

It's just one more powerful tool that is built into LeafBridge.
