Not too long ago, everyone in our small town got a call saying that all debit cards are deactivated and new ones are being sent out. Apparently there was a big security problem. Today I found out that the company that dishes out the cards is called Personix. The banks here all use them for their debit cards. From what I was told, it was a problem at their company.
A quick search for news about this turns up nothing. Is it so hush-hush that not even the media heard about this? I did find on Google News that the Personix office in Boston is closing, announced just last month. Is it related? I don't know. No one mentions it.

Personix changed their name to Fiserv (because Fiserv bought them and merged). Here is an advisory from Fiserv directly:
